The Cross and The Flame: A futile argument

Quotes are in italics; with links to the quotes where possible.

Recently the UMC's logo of the Cross and Flame have come under attack.
Adopted shortly after the merger of The Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church, the symbol relates he United Methodist church to God through Christ (cross) and the Holy Spirit (flame). The flame is a reminder of Pentecost when witnesses were unified by the power of the Holy Spirit and saw "tongues, as of fire" (Acts 2:3). The two tongues of a single flame may also be understood to represent the union of two denominations. The two separate flames represent the Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist Church coming together to form the United Methodist Church.

Now coming from an ancestry that is European-American, I have a hard time believing that a symbol that has withstood the test of time, and was adopted at the height of the civil rights movement has suddenly taken on a hateful meaning. In fact, I personally don't believe it has taken on that meaning at all, except by some who are foolish enough to want to lead people down a path straight to hell. Now I personally can't say what it means to be black in America. I have distant cousins who are black, I have friends who are black, and I even asked on Facebook and one friend said "Well, I wouldn't think that Methodists are cross burners."

In fact, I did a bit of digging, when I searched churches with Flames in their logos, I came up with no less than 2,170,000,000 results, when I searched churches with Crosses in their logos, I got 2, 370,000,000 and when I searched churches with flames and crosses in their logos, I had no less than 61,800,000 results.  And those are just individual churches; the PCUSA uses a cross made of flames and a dove as their official symbol, the Churches of God, use a flame surrounding the cross, and the Free Methodist also use flame symbolism in their logos.

Similarly I don't think that this is an issue of the cross and the flame. I believe instead as one minister pointed out it is to remove the cross from Christianity. You see the cross is what is offensive to people. Think of the multitude, "And He summoned the multitude with His disciples, and to them, "If any one wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me." Mark 8:34

In Greek the word deny is aparneomai. It is a strong word meaning that a person must refuse to be thinking about oneself.  This is a strong statement. It is a picture of complete denial of one’s desires and wishes. Lately I have spoken to several atheists, and the one thing several people have said to me is "I don't know what I believe in and frankly I don't want to be a Christian because it will mean I can't have fun." Really? Some Christians are the most fun people I know.

Jesus said we must take up our cross. In Christ’s time everyone understood the meaning of the word cross. Flavius Josephus tells us the Roman soldiers literally crucified two thousand people on crosses on one occasion. To carry your cross meant that you were dragging it along and eventually you reached the place where the soldiers would crucify you. Therefore, Jesus’ point is that you must be so committed to denying yourself that you are willing to die for Christ. No one will truly follow Christ who continues to be more interested in himself or herself than in Christ. Jesus does not give us the option of calling Him our Savior and Lord while continuing to satisfy our own desires and wishes. We must deny ourself to the point of death in our following Him. This is the character of a true follower of Christ.

Now I know a lot of "Pastors" will say I am crazy, but it's honestly without a doubt in my mind what I feel is happening in our society and there will be a lot of other churches that need to lose their logos also...for fear of offending someone.  However, I look at the liberal church and I see all of the evil that John saw in his Revelation; however, I want to take a look at those seven churches and I want to show you the lessons that I recently read about and actually agree with.

Ephesus:
The lesson in the letter to Ephesus teaches that truth and love must go hand-in-hand. A church that upholds doctrinal purity at the expense of showing love is just as flawed as a church that upholds congregational harmony at the expense of truthful teachings. Instead, Jesus reveals that a church fashioned in His image must teach God’s Truth in love.

Symrna:
Like the church in Smyrna, Christians are persecuted worldwide in obvious and insidious ways. This letter warns all Christians that although we may suffer greatly, the length of tribulation will be short compared to the promise of eternal life.

Pergamum:
Like the Christians in Pergamum, it’s easy to normalize the non-Christian behavior of those around us and allow that behavior to dilute our values (1 Corinthians 15:33). But the Bible urges us to “not conform to the pattern of this world” but be transformed by the renewal of our mind in accordance with God’s Word (Romans 12:2).

Thyatira:
Just as some in Thyatira’s church were led astray by a false prophet, Christians today fall prey to cult leaders, occult practices, and other false teachings. To share in Christ’s victory, we are to avoid these “so-called deep secrets” of Satan (Revelation 2:24) and hold firm to Christ’s teachings.

Sardis:
Today, Christians can fall into the trap that ensnared the church in Sardis if we merely go through the motions of practicing our faith without really feeding our spirit. We can avoid becoming “the living dead” by engaging in our faith through Bible study, prayer, and fellowship.

Philadelphia:
The message to Philadelphia shows us the blessings that come when we maintain our faith despite life’s tribulations. In fact, those who persevere despite weaknesses will stand strong as pillars in Heaven.

Laodicia:
Like the church in Laodicea, it’s easy to become complacent in our faith during times of abundance. Christ warns us in this revelation that he will “spit out” lukewarm disciples. Instead, Jesus urges us to keep seeking the Lord’s face even after His hand has bestowed riches in our lives.

So while we are arguing over a cross and a flame, we are becoming more and more lukewarm about the gospel, this is just a way for the enemy to distract us from exactly what he fears, loss of power. Personally, I am sick of these arguments. In fact it's due to these arguments that many of the atheists that I have come in contact with have rejected the church once I start talking with them.

Our arguments over frivolous things have watered down the gospel. I have had people who are LGBT ask me "If my wife and I come to church, would we be welcome?" My first question is "Would you be open to the gospel? And I don't mean a watered down version of the gospel?" They look at me, and ask "What does that mean?" I tell them, "Yes, you are welcome in our church, but I can't promise you that I won't step on your toes when I speak about sexual immorality; however, what you do with that information, is completely up to you."

Because of what the world has decided the Gospel should be, pastors are hungry prestige, that they are willing to keep the gospel watered down. People tell me that I am antagonistic, controversial, contentious, yet, I don't see any of these people actually contending for the faith in meaningful ways.
Author Kenneth C. Haugk defines antagonists as “individuals who on the basis of nonsubstantive evidence, go out of their way to make insatiable demands, usually attacking the person or performance of others.” Yet much to the consternation of many, my views are backed up by substantial study, scripture and even peer reviewed articles. In fact my friends tell me that I am probably stepping on the toes of many Christians. To step on toes is to insult, or upset one, especially by getting involved in something that is one's responsibility. This was very evident last night when a member of a UMC Clergy chat told me that "to participate this in this group you have to be a member of the clergy." Well frankly, the group is public and there is no way to tell who is clergy and who isn't. What bothered the person is that I was stepping on toes and basically challenging the group.

Again this is something that renders our gospel void to outsiders.  Last time I checked my baptism into the church renders me a minister of the gospel; not a piece of paper from the District, Conference, or any man. After all in our tradition this call is grounded in a Wesleyan understanding of servant ministry and servant leadership that affirms that all Christians are ministers by virtue of their baptism. (The Christian as Minister)

I have spent some time this week, thinking about the Musical Hamilton, I have been thinking about Aaron Burr's song "Wait for it".

Hamilton doesn't hesitate.
He exhibits no restraint.
He takes and he takes and he takes
And he keeps winning anyway.
He changes the game.
He plays and he raises the stakes.
And if there's a reason
He seems to thrive when so few survive
Then Goddamnit I'm willing to wait for it.
I'm willing to wait for it...
I'm willing to wait for it...
Life doesn't discriminate
Between the sinners and the saints
It takes and it takes and it takes.
And we keep living anyway
We rise and we fall and we break
We fall and we make our mistakes.
And if there's a reason I'm still alive
When so many have died
Then I'm willin' to- then I'm willin' to-
Wait for it... Wait for it... Wait for it...

Right now it seems that the liberal church keeps winning, and they are changing the game, raising the stakes; and so many conservative pastors and pastoral candidates are falling behind and they aren't surviving. Like a young Hamilton, it is time for conservative churches to start speaking up against their bishops, and stop allowing for a watered down gospel...may be it's time for churches to stop being scared of the contentious, antagonistic, controversial Christian...may be it's time for them to embrace the laity who are willing to fight when so many are terrified to walk out on the front lines because they may loose their churches, because frankly, I am sick of pastors who won't speak out, I am sick of pastors who water down the gospel, because should they anger the wrong person they won't have a church next year.

It's time to stop the fighting over logos, and start fighting for the true Gospel, it's time to FIGHT over the SOULS of the LOST! In fact, I challenge every minister that I know that lives in this area to come to town with me and pray with the lost; just spend some time walking around the downtown area and pray with the homeless, pray for those at the bar, pray for the kids who are riding skateboards, pray for the lost, pray with the member of the LGBTQIA+ community that has been rejected by church and how they change their minds when they see people who love them unconditionally. I literally have people who come back and ask me questions about my faith because I don't judge them, I just tell them, "Here's the truth of the Gospel, do with it what you will." I plant a seed and others water it and God brings the increase.

Houston, We have a Sin Problem

It has come to my attention that as Christians we are to be okay with objectification and sexualization of women over the age of 18. Evidently I not only stepped on toes today, but I stomped them with my article on asking Christians where they were when Netflix was showing other films labelled as soft porn, and the fact that children had access to those films.

But there is really no defense for the lack of outrage at the objectification and sexualization of women. Matter of fact, there are lists, and lists of films that objectify women. Matter of fact the internet movie database lists no less than 629 movies that objectify women; over 300 movies with bare breasts, over 290 movies with female nudity, 152 movies with full frontal female nudity. Seriously? But it's okay because the women are all over 18 (at least we hope).

In less than a second, 0.42 of a second to be exact, google pulled of 1,280,000,000 porn sites however, only 206,000,000 churches show up in 0.51 of a second. I hate to say this, but it's the only thing I can think to say right now, HOUSTON (CHURCH) WE HAVE A PROBLEM! It is far deeper than a movie about a dance troupe that twerks. It's far deeper than really any thing we have remotely ever considered! We have a SIN problem.

This issue of a movie is people's wake-up call. In my previous article I never said it was good, which seems to be what people are saying that I have said. The story line was good; the acting fair and the dance could have been toned down. So here is what I am asking, Why are we letting our daughters look up to women like Shakira? J-Lo? Lady Gaga? Madonna? Brittany? Why are we letting them get into competitive dance? Competitive Cheer?  Two things that can be seen as objectifying women and sexualizing them?

Naomi Parker Fraley

Men want to argue that it's because these people are over 18 that they can do this, but what would happen if we, as Christians actually stood against the sexualization and objectification of women? What if we gave our daughter's women to look up to like Susan B. Anthony? Eleanor Roosevelt? My personal heroine as a child was Naomi Parker Fraley, you best know her as Rosie the Riveter. Mrs. Fraley, who had worked in a Navy machine shop during World War II. Give our daughters something wholesome to look up too.

I think a friend of mine said it best "We have reached this point because "Christians" don't like others sins, but they do like their own sin." In other words, we want to see others do better, but we don't want our own sins pointed out. Well, I hate to say this, but I am here to point it out...we complain that people aren't doing enough to point out the wrongs in the world, well I just pointed out the wrong and it hurt a lot of people...this is your wake up call church...

Here is what the scripture tells you about sin:

MY Sin may be A Secret but IT'S NEVER PRIVATE

"You may be sure that your sin will find you out." Numbers 32:23 (NIV)

Sin DOES LONG TERM DAMAGE

"Don't deceive yourself: You can't make a fool out of God! Whatever you plant is what you'll harvest. If you plant in the soil of your sinful nature, you'll harvest destruction. But if you plant in the soil of your spiritual nature, you'll harvest everlasting life!" Galatians 6:7-8 (GW)

"Because of your stubbornness in refusing to repent and turn from your sin you are storing up terrible punishment for yourself. For there is going to come a day of judgment when God will judge all people according to what they have done. He will give eternal life to those who seek God . . . but for those who are self-seeking and reject the truth and practice sin, they will face God's anger."  Romans 2:5-8 (NIV/NLT)

It's time to wake up church from your slumber, it's time to realize we have accepted sin far too easily and that is why we are where we are!

Where were you? A Challenge to Christians over their Boycotts

Christians, parents, woke folks, where were you in February when J-Lo and Shakira were shaking what their mama's gave them. You act like hyper-sexualization of dance is something new. It's not. But where was the outrage when other pornographic films were released and influencing people, young people, because you can access porn on just about any streaming service without parental controls.

I am a huge foreign film fan. I love a good foreign film. I love Science Fiction, I love a good comedy or adventure film, I also like classic films.

The first thing you need to realize is that 1) Cuties is a foreign film. 2) U.S. courts have ruled that the First Amendment protects "indecent" pornography from regulation, but not "obscene" pornography. People convicted of distributing obscene pornography face long prison terms and asset forfeiture. However, in State v. Henry (1987), the Oregon Supreme Court ruled that obscenity was an unconstitutional restriction of free speech under the free speech provision of the Oregon Constitution and abolished the offense of obscenity in that state, although it remains an offense on the federal level. Child pornography is illegal in the United States. The U.S. Supreme Court has held that it is not protected by the First Amendment, and even if not obscene, it is not considered protected speech, according to New York v. Ferber.

So I have a couple of questions, where was your outcry against the movie Immoral Tales. Immoral Tales (French: Contes immoraux) is a 1973 French anthology film directed by Walerian Borowczyk. The film was Borowczyk's most sexually explicit at the time. The film is split into four erotic-themed stories that involve the loss of virginity, masturbation, bloodlust, and incest.

The film is separated into four stories:

  • The first story involves André (Fabrice Luchini), who takes his 16-year-old cousin (played by Lise Danvers) to the beach to perform fellatio on him in tune to the waves of the incoming tide.
  • The second story is titled Thérése the Philosopher, an adaptation of the novel of the same name. It involves a teenage country girl (Charlotte Alexandra) who intermingles sexual desires in her imagination with her dedication to Christ after being locked in her room.
  • The third story features Elizabeth Báthory (Paloma Picasso) as a countess who murders young girls in order to gain eternal youth by bathing in their blood and a girl (Marie ForsÃ¥) putting pearls inside her vagina.
  • The final story involves the daughter of Pope Alexander VI, Lucrezia Borgia (Florence Bellamy), having sex with her male relatives.

Before that there was a film called Blue is the Warmest Color.  Not realizing this film was a lesbian love story I did watch this one, but as soon as the graphic sex scenes came on, I realized that this was a pornographic film.

The Plot:
The film follows Adèle, a French teenager who discovers desire and freedom as an aspiring female painter Emma enters her life. The film charts their relationship from Adèle's high school years to her early adult life and career as a school teacher. The premise of Blue Is the Warmest Colour is based on the 2010 graphic novel of the same name by Julie Maroh. The Sex scenes were extremely graphic and even at the Cannes film festival the film shocked some critics with its long and graphic sex scenes (although fake genitalia were used).

I literally looked for articles against this film from Christians, who decried the film and it's showing on Netflix. I looked for people who boycotted Netflix and there was nothing available. So where were you? And please don't give me the line, "Oh if you are over 18 it's fine for you to star in a pornographic film, but not in a film like Cuties."

Now a word about Cuties, and yes, I watched the movie. I know what it's about. The film stars Fathia Youssouf, Médina El Aidi-Azouni, Esther Gohourou, Ilanah Cami-Goursolas and Maïmouna Gueye. The plot revolves around a French-Senegalese girl with a traditional Muslim upbringing who is caught between traditional values and Internet culture. According to the filmmakers, the film is intended to criticize the hypersexualisation of pre-adolescent girls.

Cuties: The Plot

Eleven-year-old immigrant girl Amy originally from Senegal, lives with her mother Mariam in one of Paris's poorest neighborhoods. In an apartment along with her two younger brothers, she waits for her father to rejoin the family from Senegal. She helplessly witnesses the suffering of her mother, whose polygamous husband is preparing to return from the country with a second wife. She is also bored during prayer and more generally of the religious values that her aunt seeks to transmit to her.

Things turn swiftly, as Amy is fascinated by her disobedient neighbor Angelica's twerking clique called Cuties, an adult-style dance troupe which has contrasting fortunes and characteristics to Mariam's religious customs, values and traditions. The pre-teens practice for a competition and do not hesitate to adopt revealing outfits in the image of their older competitors. Encouraged by success and the quest for recognition on social networks, Amy decides to incorporate into the choreography gestures of sexually suggestive dance moves that she has seen on videos.

Following a humiliation at school, she sends a compromising photo of her vagina on social networks, which causes her to be rejected by her classmates. Following a quarrel with the rest of the Cuties, they ban her from performing with them at the dance contest. While her father's wedding is on the same day as the final competition at Parc de la Villette, she is determined to dance with them. Sneaking out of the house in her dance outfit, she pushes another member of the Cuties, Yasmine, into a lake, so that the Cuties have no choice but to allow her to dance with them. The highly suggestive dance routine shocks the audience. Suddenly thinking about her mother during the routine, Amy bursts into tears and leaves before their performance ends to join her mother. Upon her return, she runs into her aunt who blames her for her outfit and recent attitude. Amy's mother intervenes by telling her to leave her daughter alone and then hugs her to reassure her. Amy implores her mother to allow Amy to not attend the wedding, in order to demonstrate her disapproval. Amy's mother permits her to not go, but states that she herself must go to fulfill her duty as a wife. Amy then abandons both the traditional wedding dress and her sexy dancer's outfit, and, in jeans and a t-shirt, her hair down, she goes out to play jump rope with a group of girls.

I tend to agree with Common Sense Media, that "Maïmouna Doucouré has created an evocative, compassionate portrait of young girls finding their identity and values". But I also see where the dance moves can be considered sexualization.

Oh, and it's not just Netflix, Fawsome Films often puts "B-side" cheesy soft porn films in their lists. In 2016 they added
Housewives from Another World. As I said when I started writing I love films, so when I see a classic movie poster with something stupid like "Housewives from Another World" written on it, I automatically think, "Oh, 1950-60s sci-fi film." Imagine if you can my horror when I realized it wasn't a cheesy sci-fi film, but rather a porn film, the opening scene was a man having an extramarital affair with full on frontal nudity. When I looked at the plot on Fawesome Films, it read: Karen catches her husband, Max, with his neighbor, Rita. The alien, now inhabiting the body of Karen, works to prevent the secret development of space exploration satellites.

So Christians, where is your outrage when Netflix and other streaming companies show real pornographic films? Why weren't you protesting then? Why is it okay to show a movie with graphic Lesbian sex or even a cheesy B-side movie starting a "Pet of the Year"? Oh, wait I forget, it's okay as long as the people are over 18. Or isn't sin, sin in the eyes of God?

1 Corinthians 6:18-20 says Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world.

Psalm 119:37 Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways.

James 1:14-15 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

Mark 7:21-23 For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”

You notice that God doesn't say "Well one of these is less than another." He calls them out as equal, they are all evil. So where were you? Where was your outcry? After all pornography, is pornography and is equally evil.

Broken Crayons...

I don't talk much about my life. I personally don't think that it's anyone's business. I have told my call story, I have told about my walk through candidacy and I have even told a bit about being told that my church no longer supports my call to ministry. However, today I think that can change.

I know we have all heard the saying "Broken crayons still color." the saying became pretty popular when Shelley Hitz published her book Broken Crayons Still Color: From Our Mess to God's Masterpiece. I have done a lot of thinking on the subject though. As a former educator, I worked with a teacher who would bring in a muffin pan and we'd melt down the crayons into new ones, or we'd shave them down to make candles for mother's day. Even broken crayons have their uses.

Recently I was going to color a picture with Oil Pastels. I hadn't done much work with Pastels, so for me it was a new medium. I was completely excited, I pulled out my box of colors and realized that through the years, my box of pastels had some how gotten broken. If you know me, I am not a house keeper and at some point I probably set a heavy box on the pastels.

Nevertheless, I pulled out my first color. A light blue, I scribbled with the color, then added the darker color above. Guess what? The saying is true...broken crayons still color. Okay so maybe that's not a surprise to some, but for me, it's a revelation. A revelation you say? Yes, a revelation.

Let's look at our lives. Everyone knows that life is messy. It's never what we expect. I never expected that 6 years ago, my best friend of two years would walk out of my life forever. I never expected that because someone threw eggs on her house she would blame me and we'd go to court and that would be the last time I would ever see her again. Let's just say it broke me. It broke my heart, it made me distrustful of people, Christians in particular. In fact, let's go back a bit farther than 6 years, let's go back to 2005, I was in Christian counseling for depression (Dysthymic Disorder). Most people don't realize that counselors have a power over their clients. In psychology, this is called a power differential, and it "renders the patient vulnerable and thus unable to participate in such relationships as a truly consenting person.” (Plaut, 1995, p. 264) So powerful was the counselor in my situation that I didn't realize that she was projecting her own thoughts on to me. In psychology circles, this is known as Countertransference. So strong was her countertransference that her supervisor noticed it and in order to "not lose her license" suggested that she refuse to see me without the recommendation of a new counselor. Luckily I found a new counselor, and we worked through all the problems, including all the messes in my head from the lies that my former counselor told my new counselor, and suggesting that I only see male counselors, because of her countertransference. In the end, we found out that my former counselor was going through a divorce, she and her husband were both having extra-marital affairs, often with homosexual partners.

So life gets messy, and we become broken. It's in this broken state that I think God does His best work. Psalm 34:18 states The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. In order to be brokenhearted, one has to be broken. It's in these moments of our lives that God is able to say "hey, look at me, I am here, I want to be with you, I want to help you! No where in Scripture does God tell you "You have to get it right before I can use you."

Let's just take a look at some of the people God used:

  • Abraham -Was old.
  • Elijah – Was suicidal.
  • Joseph – Was abused.
  • Job – Went bankrupt.
  • Moses – Had a speech problem.
  • Gideon – Was afraid.
  • Samson – Was a womanizer.
  • Rahab – Was a prostitute.
  • Samaritan Woman – Divorced.
  • Noah – Was a Drunk.
  • Jeremiah – Was young.
  • Jacob – Was a cheater.
  • David – Was a murderer.
  • Jonah – Ran from God.
  • Naomi – Was a widow.
  • Peter – Denied Christ three times
  • Martha – Worried about everything.
  • Zacchaeus – Was small and money hungry.
  • The Disciples – Fell asleep while praying.
  • Paul – A Pharisee who persecuted Christians before becoming one.

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” --
Romans 8:28

While friendships have come and gone over the years, while my calling to ministry felt like it was yanked  from under my feet and left me distrustful of the people that call themselves Christians, I know that I can still be used by God. The one verse that I cling to is "The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor, he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;" -- Isaiah 61:1

Our lives, our messes, are what make us...well us. If you ever feel like you aren’t worthy enough to be used by God, let alone loved by him, just remember that Jesus used a bunch of flawed people to share Hope to a flawed and broken world. In God, we find renewal, mending, and purpose. Jesus didn’t call the equipped, He equipped the called. And no matter what you’ve been through in life, remember that the same power that conquered the grave lives within you. You are worthy of life. You are worthy of God's love. You are worthy of joy. You are worthy of a fulfilling purpose that will take you places you never imagined reaching...after all even a broken crayon can still be used to make a masterpiece.

Many Paths to God: Lies Christians accept to make others Comfortable

I don't know about you all, but I am done with being the type of Christian that tells others things that make them comfortable. Before I really delve in to my topic, I want folks to know that I am not judging anyone. However, the scripture that will come up 99.9% of the time in the conversations about this has already been written about.

Over the past few weeks, I have been watching different people state their Christian beliefs online, then as soon as someone offers to read their "cards" they jump on board with Tarot. While I understand t
he tarot is a pack of playing cards, used from the mid-15th century in various parts of Europe to play games such as Italian tarocchini, French tarot and Austrian Königrufen, many of which are still played today. In the late 18th century, some tarot decks began to be used for divination via tarot card reading and cartomancy leading to custom decks developed for such occult purposes. Yet it is still dangerous as it opens the door to evil.

In fact, the Nazi party was involved in the occult. As it turns out, the Nazi party incorporated occultism from its very start. The political group that would eventually become the Nazi party (the German Worker's Party, or DAP) was founded in part by individuals from the Thule Society, an esoteric group dedicated to studying the mythological origins of the Aryan race. Several prominent Nazis were either members or active within the society, including Rudolph Hess, who would become the deputy further to Hitler; Alfred Rosenburg, head of the ministry that oversaw Nazi Germany's occupied territories in Eastern Europe; and Dietrich Eckhart, who founded the DAP.

The Thule society's primary focus was on the study of Ariosophy, referring to wisdom regarding the Aryans founded by occultists Guido von List and Lanz von Liebenfels. These individual's beliefs would come to inform significant aspects of the Nazi state, such as von List's belief in the power of magical runes. The most glaring example of this would be the twin "sig" runes that formed the SS insignia.

Occult-related activities and organizations were often suppressed in Nazi Germany at the behest of Heinrich Himmler's Rasputin-like personal occultist, Karl Maria Wiligut. The point of this was to ensure that Wiligut's own brand of occultism would be the eminent philosophy of the Nazis. Wiligut had developed a religion centered on worshipping the Germanic god Irmin.

The reason that the occult was so alluring to the Nazi is that it promises power. If someone is involved in the occult can provide secret information to an individual that only he knows, and the predict something that does indeed occurs then the occultist has secured power over the other person. Another reason is that the occult promises love, but it's not the divine unconditional love of God (agape), rather it's a psychosexual love (eros), which explains why many of those involved in the occult are immoral, recognizing only a standard of authority established by their own reasoning. The occult also provides a minute amount of certainty in an uncertain world. It provides a sense of belonging so desperately needed by those who reject the love of Jesus Christ.

Let's take a look at Acts 13:6-12

6 When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they came upon a certain magician, a Jewish false prophet named Bar-Jesus. 7 He was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence, who summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God. 8 But Elymas the magician (for that is the meaning of his name) opposed them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith. 9 But Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him 10 and said, “You son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, full of all deceit and villainy, will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord? 11 And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you will be blind and unable to see the sun for a time.” Immediately mist and darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking people to lead him by the hand. 12 Then the proconsul believed, when he saw what had occurred, for he was astonished at the teaching of the Lord.

A fulness of deceit and mischief together, make a man indeed a child of the devil. And those who are enemies to the doctrine of Jesus, are enemies to all righteousness; for in it all righteousness is fulfilled. The ways of the Lord Jesus are the only right ways to heaven and happiness. However, more than that, Acts 13 reveals God's attitude towards the Occult.

According to Martin Walters, The Kingdom of the Occult states of the sorcerer/magician:

1. They are in league with Satan and possess certain supernatural powers.

2. They are false prophets.

3. They seek to influence people politically and ecclesiastically, particularly those in positions of power. (v. 6-7)

4. They attempt to prevent those who are seeking to hear the Word of God from learning it by opposing those who preach it. (v.8)

5. They deliberately attempt to divert prospective converts from the faith as their ultimate goal (v.8).

Dr. Walters continues by contrasting to this, the judgement of the Holy Spirit is explicit:

1. He calls such attempts and practices "Fully of all kinds of deceit and trickery" (v. 10-NIV)

2. He designates occultism and the occult as having its origin with the devil by calling Bar-Jesus "Son of the devil." (v. 10)

3. He unmasks the occultists' tactics and declares them to be enemies of all that is righteous. He calls them perverters of the Lord, which are designated as "straight," or right. (v. 10).

The "religion" that the leaders of Black Lives Matter claim to practice is an ancient religion from Western Africa called Yoruba. One of the main practices of the Yoruba religion is divination. William Jones had attended predominantly African-American churches throughout the earlier part of his life and had considered himself to be a spiritual person. The Christian church just did not give him the personal attention he wanted.

Notice the article says it didn't give Jones the attention he sought. Not the attention that would glorify God. He wanted the attention himself. That is what false religions and the occult promise people. The attention they seek.

You see God has been warning those after His heart for years not to go after practioners of the Occult. Deuteronomy 18:9-12 “When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord. And because of these abominations the Lord your God is driving them out before you.

Leviticus 19:26-31 “You shall not eat any flesh with the blood in it. You shall not interpret omens or tell fortunes. You shall not round off the hair on your temples or mar the edges of your beard. You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the Lord. “Do not profane your daughter by making her a prostitute, lest the land fall into prostitution and the land become full of depravity. You shall keep my Sabbaths and reverence my sanctuary: I am the Lord.

Isaiah 8:19 And when they say to you, “Inquire of the mediums and the necromancers who chirp and mutter,” should not a people inquire of their God? Should they inquire of the dead on behalf of the living?

There are scripture upon scripture telling us to not engage with the darkness. Christians need to stop letting people think there are many ways to Christ. Matthew 7:13-14 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

How many of us know people who are choosing the wide way because it's easy? They are choosing the wide path because it is allowing them to live how ever they want without the discomfort of conviction that God brings to you life? They don't have to change? How many people do we know as Christians who support people in their every path leads to God? How many times have you been scared to say something because you didn't want to make people uncomfortable?

There is a bumper sticker that I abhore. It says basically states that all religions are equal and should coexist, but the truth is that all religions are not equal. Christianity isn't a religion at all, it's a relationship. Friends we as Christians, need to stop making people feel comfortable, we need to stop with the I am okay, you are okay, we are all okay since that is not the truth. We are lying to people by telling them they are okay whatever path they choose. Sometimes I think people are scared to go out and minister to people. Some of us, if challenged, get defensive, we will stoop to the levels of others to get our points across. Even I am guilty of this. Instead we need to be willing to tell people that Christianity is the only path to God. We need to educate ourselves in apologetics so that we can speak to people and do so in a way that isn't offensive and being able to do this will bring more people to Christ.

I have found that people are often times scared to walk up to the stranger in the street and strike up a conversation; my friend Tim used to be so good at this. He'd walk up to the most random stranger and say "Do you know my friend Jesus?" By the time the person checked out, he'd most likely exchanged numbers and began to build a relationship with that person.

I have met several people over the past few weeks that don't believe in God and I have built relationships with them. I am comfortable enough to say "I don't agree with your lifestyle or I don't believe in what you do, but I care enough about you to still be your friend and to tell you the truth."

Christians we need to stop coddling people and actually tell them the truth. Yes, it will hurt. Yes, it will make them angry. Yes, it will possibly cost you their friendship, but hopefully in the end, it will help them come to a true relationship with Christ.

A Fall from Grace

Earlier this month Jerry Falwell, Jr. stepped down indefinitely as the Chancellor of my Alma Mater. Today, Jerry Falwell, Jr. stepped down permanently from his position due to a scandal. (It was later reported he was not stepping down.) Many fellow graduates were shocked, but others were not shocked at all. In fact, one lady said "I am glad this happened." The fact remains that Chancellor Falwell is a man. As a female graduate of Liberty, I can say that I didn't have it easy in the seminary, namely because I wasn't at the school to meet a husband, I was genuinely intrigued by the scriptures.

Falwell did release a statement to the Washington Examiner. From the way the release was written it sounds like a feeble attempt to clear his name, but not that of his wife.

Despite all of this, I would encourage my fellow Christians to not rejoice in the human failures of Jerry Falwell. Instead, I would encourage you to pray for him, his family and the school. 1 Corinthians 13:6 it [love] does not rejoice in wrongdoing but rejoices in truth. Proverbs 24:17 states Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and let not your heart be glad when he stumbles. We shouldn't be rejoicing at the failures, we shouldn't be gloating in the moral failures of a person, rather we need to be rejoicing that Chancellor Falwell will now have time to work on getting his life back in order and work on his marriage, if the marriage survives this.

Obidiah 1:12 states But do not gloat over the day of your brother in the day of his misfortune; do not rejoice over the people of Judah, in the day of their ruin; do not boast in the day of distress.

At this time, all I can do is think "Thank God my life isn't lived out loud, that my sins are not broadcast for the world to hear." The reason I think it's easy for us to judge Mr. Falwell is because at this time, we are just glad it isn't us; we are holding him to a higher standard than we hold even ourselves.

When was the last time that you were wronged? Or that your sins were found out by someone else? When was the last time that we watched with glee someone else "get what they deserve?" While most of the people I know are not gloating in the fall of Jerry Falwell, they are relieved at the fact that he resigned, hoping that the school can get back on track.

To be a student at Liberty, you have to agree to "The Liberty Way." I had to agree to uphold the standards of the honor code, which covers every thing from the history of Liberty all the way down to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974. The Liberty Way/Student Honor Code prohibits Sexual relations outside of marriage, and only between natural born men and natural born women. Sexual relations outside of a biblically-ordained marriage between a natural-born man and a natural-born woman are not permissible at Liberty University. In personal relationships, students are encouraged to know and abide by common-sense guidelines to avoid the appearance of impropriety. Activities inconsistent with these standards and guidelines are violations of the Student Honor Code.

At this time, it is my desire that Liberty's new leadership be charged with upholding The Liberty Way in all ways, fashion and form. I am also asking my followers/readers to not rejoice in the fall of Chancellor Falwell, instead take the time to pray for him. To pray that God will show him the way, to which he will need to follow. Pray for his family, and the Liberty Family...because of the next few months and possibly the entire next year, they are going to be needing our prayers, as they change leadership (pending tomorrow's announcement).

Until we know more, we should become humble. Humbleness is not a sign of weakness. It’s a sign of a right heart with God.

Are you bitter over something wrong that was done to you and are finding it hard to let go? Have you rejoiced over another’s misfortune after they have wronged you? This is the time to get with God and repent and ask God to fix what needs fixing. When we turn the matter over to the Lord, He will take care of it. Our job is to forgive and move on.

I am not afraid...I was born to do this...

I'm a firm believer that God removes stumbling blocks and things that bar us from Him. I have been a candidate for ministry since 2017 and last night, my pastor had to deliver the news that the church was pulling their support from my candidacy. However, I didn’t cry, I didn’t get upset, in fact, I think I may have teared up and then thought “Well, okay God what’s next?” But I haven’t felt like a candidate for a long time; in fact, I haven’t felt much like a candidate since we came home from Kenya.

The reason for pulling their support was that I come across as contentious. And in some ways I am very contentious. I love a good argument, it’s a part of who I am. Yet today, when I was asked by a friend at work how candidacy was going, I just openly said “I am no longer a candidate.” Shock crossed his face and he said “WHAT?” I explained that “I am contentious, and my church can no longer support me as a pastoral candidate.” He just looked at me and said “Do they know what they just lost?”

This friend has been following my candidacy since we met. We are on very different sides of the UMC split, he is UMCNext and I am Traditionalist. Yet his question was “Do they know what they just lost?” I don’t know if the church really understands what they just lost, what I do know is that Christians are called to be various things at various times and contentious is one of them—Jude vs.3. Tonight my parents asked me “How are you feeling?” “Are you okay?” I looked at them and said “I am fine. When God closes one door, he opens another and all that jazz.”

I can honestly say I am at peace with the decision of my church. I am at peace because I had already been questioning being a minister, I had thought about lay servant, but even now that is out of the question. But that is great, it means that God has removed something that was blocking my view from Him.

Over the past few weeks, I have been taking time out and walking through my town at various times of the day, just praying. Praying where the protests have been taking place, praying at City Hall, praying at the County Commissioners office, praying over local businesses, praying with people that need prayer. I have been approaching God with all kinds of prayers. (Ephesians 6:18) And it’s been amazing. I come home and I feel 1000% refreshed, and like I may have made a small difference.

Yesterday, my friend Kimberly and I went out together. We prayed for businesses to prosper, we prayed for our leaders and those in authority over us. (1 Timothy 2:1) We prayed for hearts to be opened and to be healed. And God kept impressing on me “Two Women and a Prayer.” Now I will be honest, I don’t know exactly what that means. I don’t know if it means that God is leading me to work with another female and pray; I am still praying over it, but I do know that if, I was still a candidate, I wouldn’t be able to pursue what God is doing, I’d be too focused on how to be the perfect candidate.

Equally, I have taken a huge interest in spiritual warfare. I have started reading everything I can find on how to battle against Satan and his demons. (Ephesians 6:12) In fact, Spiritual Warfare is a neglected subject by the Wesleyan tradition for the most part. As Bob Ayres puts it, “Just because we can wear the armor doesn’t mean we know how to use it. Unless we know how to use it, and use it properly, we don’t stand a chance against our enemy.”

C.S. Lewis writes in the preface to The Screwtape Letters, There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors and hail a materialist or a magician with the same delight.

I think of St. Joan of Arc, the Maid of Orleans, at the tender age of 13 when she first had her visions of figures she identified as Saint Michael, Saint Catherine, and Saint Margaret, who told her to drive out the English and take the Dauphin to Reims for his consecration. Joan’s military advances were in the physica

l, but she also fought spiritual battles. In fact, she probably championed the battlefield of the mind long before Joyce Meyer, when she said “All battles are first won or lost in the mind.”

However, today it has become clear, quiet clear, that God has removed the stumbling block that was candidacy; and He is going to do something far greater. So as I go forth to start a new ministry journey, some have asked and may be asking “Are you scared?” “No, I am not afraid…I was born to do this.”

Abstaining from All Appearances of Evil: A Call to True Christian Living

As Christians, we are called to live a life that is set apart from the world. We are to be in the world but not of the world, as Jesus taugh...
